Through the aesthetics of the user interface, the work examines the process extending from the formation of knowledge to action through the categories of interest, concern, knowledge, and action, drawing on political theorist Robert Dahl’s stages of political participation. These processes are explored through the transformation of coal—the raw material formerly used at the Hasanpaşa Gasworks—into gas, its storage and distribution, and its eventual conversion into heat and light energy. In other words, the stages of interest, concern, knowledge, and action are placed in an analogical relationship with the gasworks’ former function, corresponding respectively to the transformation, storage, and distribution of raw material and the illumination of the city.

Emphasizing the parallel transformations from intuition to action and from raw material to energy, the video addresses the illumination of Kadıköy within the category of action, while also referencing the historic White Way streetlights in Coral Gables, Miami. Designed for Coral Gables in 1926 by Phineas Paist and Denman Fink, the 500 decorative White Way lamps were powered by electricity and reflected the modernist approach to urban planning of the period. At the time, however, many cities still relied on gas lighting. Coral Gables represented this transition through its vision of a “modern electric city.”

In parallel with Müze Gazhane, these lamps underwent a change of function and were restored in 2021, reintegrating them into the identity of the city. Because of these historical, functional, and cultural parallels, the video imagines the White Way streetlights of Coral Gables as receiving their energy from Müze Gazhane, despite the shifting contexts that separate the two sites.
